Our teams headed out to Gamescom to share insights into upcoming titles, network and showcase their expertise in talks and roundtables. It’s been a busy few days, so let’s catch up on everything that happened in Cologne this year:

[DEATHSPRINT 66 will soon launch players into the heart of the action, and see them race for their lives in complex and colourful tracks.]

DEATHSPRINT 66
BOLTS INTO ACTION

The Bachman Media Network was broadcasting on multiple streams at this year’s event, and we were proud to see Sumo Newcastle’s crew of clone jockeys presented in their full gory glory as part of Into the Infinite: A Level Infinite Showcase which took place on Wednesday 21st August and was streamed on Twitch and YouTube. DEATHSPRINT 66 was also available to playtest for attendees to the Level Infinite booth, as they stepped into the dystopian future and raced for their lives.

Throughout the event, publisher Secret Mode also took media and creators into the world of DEATHSPRINT 66 for some special hands-on previews and interviews with the development team from Sumo Newcastle. The teams also released a new developer diary which looks at track-design, audio and more from the game. You can check this episode, plus others from the series, here.

Finally, the Future Games Show team shared their first impressions of DEATHSPRINT 66 after their hands-on preview with the game, which you can catch up on here from 34:07.

In DEATHSPRINT 66, players will take part in thrilling, 8-player PvP on-foot races across extreme obstacle courses that push the boundaries of entertainment. Run, jump, drift, slide… and try not to die as you navigate your way through deadly tracks. Find out more about this fast and furious bi-pedal racing title over on the blog.

DEATHSPRINT 66 speeds onto PC on 12th September 2024.

COSYING UP WITH CRITTER CAFÉ

Also in development from Sumo Newcastle, Critter Café was one of our upcoming titles that we took to Gamescom 2024, and media got exclusive access to this upcoming title in behind-closed-doors playtest sessions held by publisher Secret Mode.

Critter Café revealed a new, exclusive look at gameplay footage during the Future Games Show’s coverage of the event, and Gameplay Programmer at Sumo Newcastle, Eleanor Gregory, was interviewed about bringing cosy to life in this brand-new game. You can hear from Eleanor here from 45:45.

In Critter Café, you can create your own fully customisable character and cosy café filled with fantastical creatures before opening the doors for customers to sit down, have a coffee, and spend time with their favourite Critters. Rescue critters from mysterious portals by entering magical rifts and solving puzzles… and bring them home to your café!

Critter Café is due for release onto PC and Switch later in 2024.

Two creatures with glowing eyes and tentacles face the player as they wield a sword prepared for battle.[The Lab42 took to the Devcom stage to discuss reimagining your IP in virtual reality, and included examples of their recent work on Metal: Hellsinger VR, which is releasing this Autumn.]

DIVING INTO DEVELOPMENT

Also in Cologne this month, Sumo saw people from its global teams share their expertise during Devcom 2024. Lab42’s Benjamin Culff and Ollie Cullen, PixelAnt Games’ Pavol Buday and Pavel Rohleder, and Atomhawk’s Anett Jaschke all took to the stage on a range of topics including VR, Mobile UI/UX and Business Development.

More information about these sessions can be found here, and the recordings will be available soon.
