Co-founders to Step Down After Over Two Decades; Company Refocuses on Core Strengths and Enters New Era of Opportunity
Sheffield, Thursday, 8 May 2025 – Sumo Group today announced a planned leadership transition as its co-founders, CEO Carl Cavers, COO Paul Porter and Director of Excellence and Integration Darren Mills retire after more than 30 years in the games industry and 22 years leading the business. The change marks a significant milestone in the company’s history and signals the beginning of a new chapter focused on Sumo’s core strengths.
“Stepping away from something we’ve built over two decades is never easy, but it’s the right time,” said Carl Cavers, outgoing CEO and co-founder. “We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together, and we’re confident that Sumo is in a strong position to continue evolving and thriving.”
As part of the transition, Gary Dunn will step into a new leadership role as Chief Operating Officer and, together with Chief Financial Officer Andy Stewart, will serve as co-CEO, ensuring continuity, deep industry experience, and a shared vision for what’s next. Tim Repa-Davies will also move onto the Board of directors of Sumo, continuing his role as Group General Counsel Head of Legal and Business Affairs.
“This is a natural evolution for Sumo,” said CFO and co-CEO, Andy Stewart. “We’re staying true to who we are, building on a strong foundation, and looking ahead with clarity and purpose. We’re excited about what’s next.”
While the last couple of years have brought challenges, the Group has made the necessary adjustments to stabilise the business and focus on long-term success. The company remains confident in its people, its capabilities, and its creative future.
Sumo is reinforcing its commitment to its clients by focussing on work-for-hire services where it has delivered some of its most successful and acclaimed titles including; Xbox’s Forza Horizon 4 and 5, Gun Interactive’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Warner Brothers’ Hogwarts Legacy and Suicide Squad, Activison’s Call of Duty: Vanguard, IOI’s Hitman trilogy and more recently Gears of War remaster “Gears of War: Reloaded” that will be released this summer. This renewed focus plays to the company’s strengths and positions it for sustainable growth.
“At our heart, Sumo has always been about creativity, collaboration, and making great games people love to play,” said Gary Dunn, COO and co-CEO. “That’s what drives our teams, and that’s what we’re committed to as we look to the future. We’re proud of our legacy and excited for what’s still to come.”
