The Challenge
Sumo Digital collaborated with The Coalition and Disbelief to modernize the original Gears of War for today’s hardware and ecosystems. This required:
- Porting a UE3 title to new platforms.
- Replacing legacy online systems with modern solutions.
- Delivering cutting-edge graphical enhancements while maintaining performance targets.
- Adding accessibility features and optimizing for handheld devices.

- Ported the original UE3 title to Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and PlayStation 5.
- Fully replaced legacy online systems with PlayFab, adding cross-play and social features.
Graphical Enhancements
- Integrated DLSS, FSR, XeSS, and VRR for next-gen performance.
- Optimized rendering to achieve 120Hz in multiplayer.
Platform & Performance
- Updated all platform SDKs for compliance and stability.
- Optimized UI and performance for handheld devices.

- Added speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and screen narration for inclusive gameplay.
