Sumo India are looking for Technical Designers of mid levels to join our growing team of designers focused on building robust and cohesive levels and gameplay experiences for a variety of multi-platform titles, in collaboration with our UK based teams.
As a Technical Designer in the World discipline, you will bridge the gap between Level Design and Engineering. Through application of a strong knowledge of both design theory and technical know-how, you’ll empower other designers to prototype, iterate and implement world and gameplay content efficiently, ensuring that gameplay systems, content, tools and workflows are efficient, scalable, and technically sound.

Responsibilities
Essential
- Understanding of Technical Design theory, standards and best practices in the creation of robust systems and gameplay objects, level streaming and scripting, appropriate to seniority.
- Demonstrable experience insome form of scripting (visual/text based), or programming languages.
- Experience working with industry‑standard game engines and design tools.
- Fluency in English with excellent communication and feedback skills, both written and verbal.
- Professional experience in Game Development, in the field of Technical Design.
- Experience collaborating with outsourced or external development teamsin multiple time-zones.
- A background spanningvaryinggenres such as open world, action-adventure, platforming and/or racing titles
- Familiarity with performance, memory, and technical constraints in world building.
- Knowledge or experience of working with object-oriented programming / languages such as C++

Key Responsibilities
Junior Technical Designer
- Implement gameplay content, level systems and LD tools, using visual or text-based scripting.
- Support Level Designers with technical problem-solving and workflow optimisation.
- Translate high-level design intent into technically feasible solutions.
- Build prototypes to help validate ideas quickly.
- Develop and maintain technical design documentation for level features and content.
- Communicate constraints, risks, and trade-offs early and clearly.
- Regularly review the work of non-technical designers to ensure workflows are optimal, content is developed systemically, and technical constraints are understood / upheld.
Junior Technical Designer
- Implements level content or prototypes with support and guidance.
- Learns engine tools, scripting languages, and pipelines.
- Fixes bugs and supports content implementation.
- Develops understanding of performance and system constraints.
- Independently owns level content and prototype features.
- Prototypes and iterates with minimal oversight.
- Collaborates effectively with engineering to resolve technical challenges.
- Writes clear, maintainable scripts and documentation.
- Owns technically complex gameplay systems and level setups.
- Anticipates technical risks and mitigates them early.
- Mentors more junior Technical Designers, and/or less technical designers.
- Defines and owns Technical Design standards and quality for the team/ project.
- Drives innovation in tools, pipelines, and level systems.
- Leads other Technical Designers within the project or studio.
- Influences engine and feature roadmap decisions.
- Acts as aproject-wide authority onTechnicalDesign.
